How to Change Your Visa Type in Spain: From NLV to DNV and Other Switches

Life in Spain evolves — and your visa situation may need to evolve with it. Perhaps you arrived on an NLV and now want to work remotely; perhaps you're on a student visa and want to stay after graduating; perhaps you've changed employment status. Here's how visa type changes work in Spain.

Why Change Visa Type?

Common reasons for needing to change visa type:

The Process: Modificación de Residencia

Changing your visa type in Spain is a 'modification of residence' (modificación de residencia). You apply to the Oficina de Extranjería with documentation showing you meet the requirements of the new visa type.

The key requirement is that you must currently be in legal status — you cannot modify your residence if your current authorisation has expired or is out of status.

NLV to DNV: The Most Common Switch

If you're on an NLV and want to switch to the DNV because you're starting remote work, this is possible and increasingly common. You'll need all the standard DNV documentation (employment contract or client contracts, income evidence) plus evidence of your current NLV status.

Alternatively, you can apply for the DNV from scratch from within Spain — this is possible and grants a three-year initial permit rather than the one year available from abroad.

Student Visa to Work/Residence Authorisation

After graduating or completing your studies, you can apply to change from a student visa to a work permit or residence authorisation within Spain. This must typically be done before your student visa expires. The requirements depend on which status you're transitioning to — employment, self-employment, or non-lucrative residence.

Timing and Legal Status

It's critical to apply for a modification of residence before your current authorisation expires. If you're in a grey area (e.g., on an NLV but starting remote work), take advice early — before your situation becomes more complex to regularise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if you have a job offer or employment contract from a Spanish employer, you can apply to modify your residence to a work authorisation. The NLV's no-working restriction applies during the NLV period — you should apply for the modification before beginning any Spanish employment.

You can apply for the DNV from within Spain, but you need to be in Spain legally. A tourist visa (or visa-free stay within the 90/180-day Schengen allowance) technically allows you to be physically present in Spain. However, most advisers recommend applying for the DNV from your home country or as an in-country application on a legal residence status.

Residence modification applications are typically processed within 1–3 months. You receive a receipt on application, which confirms your legal status during processing.
