Can You Bring Your Family on a Spain Digital Nomad Visa?
Can you bring your spouse and children to Spain on a Digital Nomad Visa? Family applications, income requirements for dependants, and how the process works.
Yes — the Digital Nomad Visa allows you to bring your immediate family to Spain. Your spouse and dependent children can be included in your application or apply as accompanying family members. Here’s how it works.
Who Counts as a Family Member?
Under the DNV framework, eligible family members include your spouse or registered partner (pareja de hecho), dependent children under 18, and in some cases, dependent adult children up to 26 who are financially dependent on you.
Unmarried partners may need to provide a registered partnership certificate. The requirements can vary by consulate, so check the specific rules for your location.
Income Requirements for Families
The income threshold increases for each family member. The main applicant needs approximately €2,520 per month. For the first dependant (typically a spouse), add roughly 75% of the SMI (~€945). For each additional dependant (children), add roughly 25% of the SMI (~€315).
So a family of four would need to demonstrate approximately €4,095 per month, or around €49,140 per year.
Application Process for Family Members
Family members can apply alongside the main applicant at the same consulate. Each person needs their own set of documents: passport, photos, criminal record certificate (for adults), and proof of the family relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificates).
All family documents must be apostilled and translated into Spanish. Submitting applications simultaneously is strongly recommended to keep the process aligned.
What About Schools for Children?
Spain has a range of schooling options: public Spanish schools (free), concertado schools (semi-private, subsidised), and private international schools. Many expat families choose international schools in the short term while children adapt, then transition to Spanish schools if staying long-term.
International school fees in Spain range from €3,000 to €15,000 per year depending on the school and location. Public schools are free and generally good quality, but instruction is in Spanish (or the regional language).
