The Digital Nomad Visa is still relatively new, and processing times vary significantly depending on which consulate handles your application. This guide gives you realistic timelines based on recent applicant experiences, so you can plan your move accordingly.

Official vs Realistic Timelines

Officially, the Spanish government aims to process DNV applications within 20 working days. In practice, most consulates take longer. Some have been relatively fast, while others have experienced backlogs as demand for the DNV has grown.

Processing Times by Country (2026 Estimates)

United Kingdom

London and Edinburgh consulates: typically 4 to 8 weeks. Post-Brexit demand has been high, and appointment availability can add extra time. The UK consulates are generally well-organised but busy.

United States

US consulates (New York, LA, Miami, Houston, Chicago, etc.): typically 4 to 10 weeks. The experience varies significantly by location. New York and LA tend to be slowest due to volume. Smaller consulates can be faster.

Canada

Toronto and Ottawa: typically 3 to 6 weeks. Canadian consulates have been relatively efficient with DNV applications.

Australia

Canberra and Melbourne: typically 4 to 8 weeks. Distance and postal times can add to the overall timeline.

How to Speed Up Your Application

A complete application is the fastest application. Missing documents, incorrect translations, or unclear financial proof almost always result in additional information requests (requerimientos) that add weeks. Have every document checked before submitting.

Book your consulate appointment as early as possible. Some consulates have multi-week waiting lists just for appointment slots.

What to Do While Waiting

Use the time productively: research cities, compare health insurance options, plan your move logistics, and start gathering post-arrival documents (padrón requirements, TIE information). Don’t make irreversible decisions until your visa is confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for the DNV from within Spain?
In some circumstances, you may be able to apply for a DNV residency authorisation from within Spain (without the visa step). This is the “authorisation without visa” route, which applies if you’re already legally in Spain. Check eligibility with a professional.
What if the consulate asks for more documents?
This is called a requerimiento. You’ll be given a deadline (usually 10 working days) to provide the additional information. Respond promptly and completely to avoid further delays.
