Individual vs Family Policies
Spanish health insurers offer both individual and family policies. A family policy typically covers the main policy holder and their spouse/partner, plus dependent children up to a certain age (commonly 18, or 25 if in full-time education).
Family policies are usually more cost-effective than separate individual policies for each family member — typically offering a discount of 15–25% compared to adding individual policies together.
What Consulates Require for Family Applications
For NLV and DNV family applications, every applicant — including children — must have their own valid health insurance coverage. This can be individual policies or a family policy that clearly shows each family member's coverage. The insurance documentation submitted to the consulate should list all covered individuals.
Children on Family Policies
Children are typically added to a parent's policy at lower rates. Young children (under 10–14 depending on insurer) are often very affordable to add — sometimes €15–€30/month per child on top of the parent policy. Teenagers and young adults up to 25 are progressively more expensive to cover.
Pregnancy and Maternity
Maternity coverage on Spanish health insurance is typically available, but usually subject to a waiting period of 8–12 months. If you're pregnant or planning a pregnancy shortly after moving, check the waiting period on any policy you're considering. Emergency obstetric care is covered from day one.
Costs for a Family
A typical family policy for two adults in their 40s plus two children in Spain might cost approximately €250–€450/month for a no-copayment plan — significantly less than two individual policies.
