After You Arrive

Finding Your Expat Community in Spain: Groups, Events, and Networks

Moving to Spain is exciting — but building a new social life from scratch takes deliberate effort. The good news is that Spain has some of the most established and accessible expat communities in the world. Here's where to find them and how to get connected.

Online Communities

Before and after arrival, online communities are invaluable for advice, connection, and practical help. Key resources include: Facebook groups (search 'expats in [city]', 'British in Spain', 'Americans in Spain' etc — most major cities have active groups); Reddit (r/expats, r/spain, and city-specific subreddits); Internations.org — a global network for expats with active chapters in most Spanish cities; and Meetup.com — for finding in-person events in your area.

City-Specific Groups

Every major Spanish city has established expat organisations. The Costa del Sol has multiple British, Scandinavian, and German associations. Madrid and Barcelona have large American, British, and French communities with regular events. Groups often host monthly events, language exchanges, and new-arrival meetups — an excellent way to meet both expats and Spaniards wanting to practise English.

Language Exchanges (Intercambio)

Language exchanges (intercambio) are a uniquely effective way to meet locals and fellow expats simultaneously. You help a Spanish speaker practise English while they help you with Spanish. Apps like Tandem, HelloTalk, and the Mixxer help find language exchange partners. In many cities, regular intercambio evenings are held in bars and cafes — check local social media groups or Meetup for events near you.

Professional Networking

If you're working remotely or looking to build professional connections in Spain, LinkedIn has active Spain-based expat professional networks. The British Chamber of Commerce in Spain, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham Spain), and the Irish Business Network operate in major cities. Coworking spaces are also excellent for organic professional networking, particularly in cities with a strong DNV holder community.

Practical Support Networks

Beyond social connection, practical support groups are enormously valuable for navigating Spanish bureaucracy and daily life. Groups specifically for NLV holders, UK nationals in Spain, and nationality-specific communities share current information about consulate experiences, bureaucratic changes, and practical advice that's difficult to find elsewhere.
