When to Apply for Spanish Health Insurance: Timing for Visa and Arrival

Getting the timing of your Spanish health insurance right is one of the most commonly mishandled parts of the NLV application. Apply too early and the policy may expire before your visa interview or before you use it. Apply too late and you'll need to rush before your appointment. Here's exactly how to time it.

The Basic Rule

Your health insurance policy must be valid and active at the time of your visa appointment, and must cover at least one year (the standard NLV duration). The policy start date should be close to — or align with — your intended travel date to Spain, not months before your appointment.

Recommended Timing for NLV Applications

For most NLV applicants, the recommended approach is: confirm your visa appointment date, then purchase health insurance approximately 2–4 weeks before that appointment. This ensures the policy is active for the interview and starts at a date close to your anticipated departure.

Some consulates request insurance starting on or close to the appointment date; others are flexible. Check your specific consulate's requirements.

What Happens If Your Policy Starts Too Early

If your policy starts significantly before your move date, you're paying premiums for a period you're not yet in Spain. More critically, if your visa application is delayed and your policy is close to expiring (one year from purchase), you may need to renew before you've even used the policy for its intended purpose.

Policy Start Dates and Backdating

Most Spanish insurers will allow you to set a policy start date slightly in the future (e.g., 2–4 weeks from purchase). This allows you to purchase insurance before your visa appointment while not starting the policy too early.

For Renewals

For NLV renewals, your insurance should be continuous — ensure your new policy starts the day your old one ends. Gaps in coverage, even of a day or two, can complicate the renewal process. Plan the switch well in advance of your renewal appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Your health insurance must be active at the time of your visa appointment. It should not have started months ago (unless you have a compelling reason), as consulates want to see insurance that will be valid during your actual time in Spain.

Many insurers offer cooling-off periods (typically 14 days) during which you can cancel for a full refund. Some specifically offer refunds if your visa is rejected — check the cancellation terms carefully before purchasing. Keep proof of any visa rejection in case you need to claim a refund.

The standard NLV is issued for one year. Your health insurance must cover at least this full one-year period. When renewing the NLV for subsequent two-year periods, the insurance must cover the full two-year renewal period.
