NLV Renewal Documents Checklist 2026: Everything You Need

Renewing your Non-Lucrative Visa involves gathering a specific set of documents — some the same as your initial application, others updated for your current situation in Spain. This checklist covers everything you need for a 2026 NLV renewal, whether you're applying at a Spanish Oficina de Extranjería or through the online SEDE system.

How NLV Renewal Works

Unlike the initial NLV application (which is made at the consulate in your home country), renewals are made in Spain — typically online through the Spanish government's SEDE Electrónica portal using your TIE card's digital certificate, or in person at the Oficina de Extranjería.

You must apply within 60 days before your current authorisation expires, and no later than 90 days after expiry (though applying after expiry is technically an infraction).

Core Documents Required

Criminal Record Certificate

Not always required for renewals, but some consulates and some Oficinas request an updated criminal record certificate for NLV renewals — particularly at the first renewal or if there have been any issues. Check with your local Oficina in advance whether this is required in your case.

Proving Continued Compliance

The renewal is not automatic — you need to demonstrate you've continued to comply with the NLV conditions. This means showing: you've been resident in Spain (not absent for extended periods), you haven't been working (no evidence of Spanish employment or economic activity), and you continue to meet the financial requirements.

Financial Evidence: What's Changed?

The financial threshold for renewal is the same as the initial application, updated for the current year (IPREM-based). Ensure your income evidence covers the full renewal period being requested (two years for first and subsequent renewals). Bank statements should show consistent deposits matching your stated income source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Begin preparing your documents at least 60 days before your current authorisation expires — ideally 90 days. This gives time to gather updated bank statements, renew health insurance, get a fresh padrón certificate, and book an appointment if needed.

Yes. The SEDE Electrónica system allows online renewal applications using your digital certificate (certificado digital). This is the most efficient method — no in-person appointment needed unless additional documents are requested.

If you apply after expiry, you are technically in an administrative infraction period. You can still apply, but it's important to do so as quickly as possible. During the processing period (once applied), your legal status is maintained. If you haven't applied at all, you should seek immediate legal advice.
