How to Register as Autónomo in Spain on a Digital Nomad Visa
Do you need to register as autónomo on a Digital Nomad Visa in Spain? When it’s required, how to do it, costs, and what freelancers need to know.
If you’re a freelancer or self-employed professional moving to Spain on a Digital Nomad Visa, you’ll likely need to register as autónomo — Spain’s system for self-employed workers. This guide explains when it’s required, how the process works, and what it costs.
What Is an Autónomo?
Autónomo is the Spanish term for a self-employed worker. Registering as autónomo means you’re enrolled in Spain’s social security system (RETA) and registered with the tax office (Agencia Tributaria). It’s the legal framework for conducting self-employed activity in Spain.
Do DNV Holders Need to Register?
If you’re employed by a foreign company, you may not need to register as autónomo — your social security situation depends on whether your employer registers you in Spain or maintains your social security in your home country.
If you’re a freelancer working for international clients, you will likely need to register as autónomo to comply with Spanish tax and social security requirements. This is particularly true once you become a Spanish tax resident (after 183 days).
How to Register: Step by Step
1. Get your NIE/TIE
You need your NIE number (included in your TIE card) before you can register. Complete your TIE application first.
2. Register with the tax office (Alta en Hacienda)
File form 036 or 037 with the Agencia Tributaria to register for self-employment tax obligations. You’ll select your IAE (economic activity) code that matches your profession.
3. Register with social security (Alta en RETA)
Register with the Régimen Especial de Trabajadores Autónomos through the social security office or online with a digital certificate.
Costs and Contributions
New autónomos in Spain benefit from the tarifa plana — a reduced social security rate of approximately €80 per month for the first 12 months. After the first year, contributions increase based on your declared income, typically starting at around €230 per month and rising with earnings.
In addition to social security, you’ll need to file quarterly VAT (IVA) declarations and quarterly income tax (IRPF) estimates, plus an annual tax return.
