Many expats think they can simply exchange their home country driving license for a Spanish one. The reality is more complex. Some licenses qualify for direct exchange; others require you to pass Spanish exams. Understanding your options saves time and money.

Can You Exchange Your License?

EU/EEA Countries

If your license is from an EU or EEA country, you can drive in Spain legally with your original license for up to 6 months from residency registration. After 6 months, you must exchange it for a Spanish license. The process is straightforward: no tests required.

Non-EU Countries

Spain has reciprocal agreements with some countries (USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, more). Check the full list at the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) website. If your country is listed, you can exchange directly. If not, you must take the Spanish driving exam.

Direct Exchange (EU/EEA and Reciprocal Countries)

Documentation Required

Original and translated (official translation) foreign license. NIE or provisional NIE. Medical exam (some regions). Completed application form (available at DGT). Proof of residency.

Process

Visit a local DGT office or authorized health clinic. Submit documents. Pay fee (approximately 25–35 euros). Wait 1–2 weeks for processing. Collect Spanish license.

Timeline

Typically 2–4 weeks if documents are complete. Processing varies by region; Madrid and Barcelona are slower. Some smaller cities complete exchanges in 5–10 business days.

Full Exam Route (Non-Reciprocal Countries)

What You'll Face

Written test (80 questions in 90 minutes, 75% passing). Practical driving test (minimum 40 minutes). Costs 150–300 euros total. Process takes 6–12 weeks from application to test date.

Preparing for the Exam

Consider a Spanish driving school (autoescuela). Costs 400–800 euros for lessons and registration. They handle paperwork and provide driving practice. Alternatively, study independently using DGT's official manual and online practice tests.

Language Consideration

The written exam is in Spanish. Basic Spanish (A2–B1) is necessary. You can request an interpreter at some DGT offices, but arrangements must be made in advance.

Temporary Driving While You Wait

You can drive legally with your original license (EU) or International Driving Permit (IDP) for 6 months while your Spanish license is processing or you prepare for exams. Get an IDP before leaving your home country—it cannot be issued in Spain.

FAQ

Do I need a medical exam for license exchange?

EU/EEA renewals don't require exams. Non-EU exchanges sometimes require a medical check. Older drivers (65+) may need medical clearance regardless.

Is my IDP valid for driving in Spain?

Yes, but for a limited time. As a resident, you'll be expected to obtain a Spanish license. Non-residents can use IDP + home country license for tourism.

What if I lose my license before exchange?

Request a duplicate from your home country embassy or consulate. Once received, proceed with exchange. This can add 2–4 weeks to the process.

Can my license be revoked if I don't exchange it quickly?

No, but driving with only a foreign license after the grace period is illegal and can result in fines. Prioritize exchange within 6 months of registration.
