When to Apply for Renewal
Apply within the 60 days before your current student visa expires, and before it actually expires. Don't wait until the last moment — renewal processing takes 1–3 months and you need to remain legally in Spain throughout your studies.
Proof of Continued Enrolment
The cornerstone of a student visa renewal is proof that you're still enrolled in your course. This means: an updated enrolment certificate (certificado de matrícula or similar) from your educational institution, evidence of course progress (some consulates ask for academic transcripts), and confirmation of the course end date.
Financial Requirements for Renewal
You must continue to demonstrate sufficient funds to support yourself: typically €600–€700/month for the renewal period. Update your bank statements (last 3 months) and any other evidence of financial support (parental support letters if applicable, scholarship documentation, etc.).
Health Insurance
Health insurance must be maintained for the renewal period. The same requirements apply as for the initial application — full coverage in Spain, no copayments. Update your certificate if your policy has changed.

After Completing Your Studies
If your studies end and you don't want to leave Spain, you need to change your visa status before your student visa expires. Options include applying for work authorisation (if you have a job offer), switching to the NLV (if you meet the financial requirements), or the DNV (if you have remote work). Planning this transition well before your student visa expires is essential.
