The Unique Advantage: UK Pensions ARE Uprated in Spain
This is the critical piece UK retirees need to understand. Your UK state pension continues to increase every April when you live in Spain. This is thanks to the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement negotiated post-2020.
Compare this to other countries:
- Spain: Pensions ARE uprated (unique, excellent for UK retirees)
- Canada: Pensions FREEZE (major disadvantage)
- Australia: Pensions FREEZE (major disadvantage)
- USA: Pensions uprated (under Totalization Agreement)
Spain is one of the few countries where your purchasing power keeps rising. This is a huge advantage for UK retirees.
How Much Is a UK State Pension?
The UK state pension for 2026 is approximately £230/week (£11,960/year) for a single person with a full National Insurance contribution record. This is the "full new state pension" rate.
Many retirees have less (£150-200/week) if they don't have a full 35-year contribution record.
Annual increase: Every April, your pension increases with UK inflation. If UK inflation is 3%, your pension increases 3%. This compounds yearly, protecting you against inflation.
Setting Up Pension Payments to Spain
Step 1: Notify the UK Pension Service
Before you move or shortly after arrival:
- Contact the UK Pension Service
- Provide your new Spanish address
- Tell them you're moving to Spain (this is important—they need to know)
Step 2: Open a Spanish Bank Account
You'll need a Spanish account to receive your pension. Most Spanish banks require:
- NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero)
- Passport
- Proof of residency (empadronamiento)
Once open, get your IBAN and BIC/SWIFT code.
Step 3: Arrange Direct Deposit
Provide the UK Pension Service with your Spanish bank details:
- IBAN
- BIC/SWIFT code
- Spanish address
Processing takes 2-4 weeks. Your first payment will arrive by wire transfer or direct deposit (depending on the bank).
Alternative: UK Cheques
If direct deposit isn't working, they can mail UK cheques to your Spanish address. However, cashing UK cheques in Spain is difficult (most Spanish banks won't accept them). Direct deposit is much better.
Taxation of UK Pensions in Spain
Your UK state pension is fully taxable in Spain. This is crucial for tax planning.
Spanish Tax on UK Pensions
- Full taxation: UK pensions are ordinary income in Spain
- Progressive rates: 19% to 47% depending on total income
- Other income matters: If you have other income (private pensions, investment income), it's combined with state pension
Example: UK State Pension Taxation
UK retiree with £12,000/year state pension (approximately €14,000):
- Spanish marginal rate on this income: ~20%
- Spanish income tax: ~€2,800/year (~€233/month)
- After-tax income: ~€11,200/year (€933/month)
This is lower than many countries, but you're definitely paying Spanish tax.
The UK-Spain Tax Treaty
The UK and Spain have a tax treaty (in effect since 2003) that specifies taxing rights.
How It Works for Pensions
- UK state pensions: Generally taxable by UK, but Spain also taxes as resident's income
- Private pensions/annuities: Generally taxable in country of residence (Spain)
- Investment income: Taxable by both; credits prevent double taxation
Tax Credits
If Spain taxes your pension and UK also taxes it (rare), you get a foreign tax credit. However, with the treaty, usually only Spain taxes UK state pensions for residents.
The S1 Form: Free Healthcare for UK Pensioners
If you're receiving a UK state pension, you can get free Spanish healthcare through the S1 form.
What It Provides
- Access to Spanish public healthcare (equivalent to NHS)
- No premiums (fully covered)
- Same services as Spanish citizens
- Doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions (subsidized)
How to Get It
- Contact the UK Overseas Healthcare Services
- Prove you're receiving a UK state pension
- Confirm your Spanish address and NIE
- They'll issue S1 certificate (2-4 weeks)
- Register with a Spanish health centre using the S1
- You're covered
Private Pensions: Tax Treatment
Many UK retirees have private pensions (drawdown accounts, annuities, workplace pensions).
How They're Taxed in Spain
- Fully taxable: All withdrawals are ordinary income
- Progressive rates: 19% to 47%
- Lump sums: If you take a lump sum, it's fully taxable in the year received
- Ongoing income: Regular withdrawals are taxed yearly
Strategy Tip
If you have a large private pension, consider timing withdrawals strategically. Taking it all in one year maximizes taxes. Spreading withdrawals over multiple years can reduce tax rates.
Notifying HMRC
Let HMRC know you're moving to Spain. You remain UK tax resident if you have significant UK ties (UK property, family in UK), but you're now also Spanish tax resident.
What to Tell HMRC
- Your new Spanish address
- Confirmation that you're moving for more than temporary reasons
- Dates of departure from UK
- Spanish address and contact details
Currency Exchange: Pound to Euro
Your UK pension is paid in pounds and you need euros. Exchange rates matter.
Best Practices
- Direct deposit: UK Pension Service transfers to your Spanish bank, which applies their exchange rate (usually 2-3% markup)
- Wise transfer: If you have UK account, use Wise for better rates
- Avoid cash exchanges: Tourist bureaux have terrible rates (5-10% markup)
Example: UK pension of £1,000 at different rates:
- Mid-market rate (1.18): €1,180
- Bank transfer (1.15): €1,150 (0.3% loss)
- Tourist exchange (1.10): €1,100 (1.7% loss)
