What the Non-Lucrative Visa Requires

Spain’s immigration regulations require Non-Lucrative Visa applicants to hold health insurance (Royal Decree 1155/2024, art. 61.2(b)). The regulation itself is short, so the detail comes from the consulate that handles your application.

In practice, consulates ask for comprehensive private health insurance with an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, with no co-payments and no waiting periods, starting when you arrive and covering at least the first year. Each consulate publishes its own checklist, and that checklist is the one to follow.

ℹ️
Travel insurance and policies that only refund medical bills are not accepted as NLV health insurance. If you are unsure whether a policy will be accepted, check the certificate wording before you pay.

What Your Insurance Certificate Should Show

Consulates review the certificate, not the marketing brochure. Before you submit, check that it states:

✓The insurer is authorised to operate in Spain
✓Comprehensive cover: GP, specialists, hospital and emergencies
✓No co-payments (sin copagos)
✓No waiting periods (sin carencias)
✓Policy dates that match your planned arrival and the visa period
✓The name of every applicant covered

Some consulates also ask to see that the premium is paid for the full year, or that repatriation is included. Check your consulate’s list before you buy.

Price, Pre-Existing Conditions and Families

What affects the price

The premium depends mainly on each applicant’s age, where in Spain you will live and your medical history. A personalised quote is the only reliable figure.

Pre-existing conditions

Insurers assess your health questionnaire before offering cover. A condition may be accepted, excluded or affect the premium, and no applicant is guaranteed acceptance. Answer the questionnaire fully, and ask how any exclusion will appear on your certificate before you apply for the visa.

Couples and families

Every person on the application needs their own cover, including children. A single family policy can cover the whole household, as long as the certificate names each person.

Keeping Your Cover at Renewal

When you renew your Non-Lucrative residence, you must show that your health insurance has continued without a break. Keep the policy active, renew it before it lapses and keep each year’s certificate. Our NLV renewal health insurance guide covers the renewal stage in detail.
